Once the area’s schoolhouse and now a light and airy holiday home with four bedrooms, garden and pool in fabulous isolation, this villa offers a sunny retreat in a thoroughly pastoral Axarquia scene where one can roam and explore, strolling to the local village or heading to the Park at El Torcal or the Costa del Sol.

It is quite something to be able to contemplate such an uninterrupted view of rural Andalucia. There are no other villas will populate the area, so the view's all yours.

The accommodation is newly fitted out and all on one floor, neat, clean and cheerfully painted. Beds are comfortable and linen is colourful and freshly laundered. Meals prepared in the bright kitchen can be enjoyed inside or out, at a shaded dining area, where a light breeze cools the property in summer months.

The swimming pool is well-maintained and the sun warms it to a delicious temperature. In the back garden is a play hut for children. In this very sunny area of Andalucia, barbecues are no longer permitted in summer months for safety's sake, but the owner provides an electric grill for outdoor use as a pretty good substitute.

Apart from dropping by to water the trees or irrigate a vegetable plot (you are welcome to try the produce), the owner will leave you to enjoy perfect privacy. Places don’t come more easy-going than this anywhere in Europe. The local hamlet of Monterroso, very much a surviving example of an older Spain, is walking distance and basic provisions can be bought there.

Axarquia's Torcal Natural Park (click for map location) with its amazing rock formations, clearly visible from the villa, is also highly recommended, as are day trips to the Malaga coast.
