This quality, well-cared for Colmenar property is naturally integrated in the surrounding scenery. Although there are a few houses to be seen in the distance, it remains very private and feels perfectly secluded, set in gorgeous Mediterranean gardens.

Inside you find space and a zestful airiness in a smartly put-together villa. Some of the original features – such as the old bread oven and beams – have been retained in a thorough restoration within thick walls that help to maintain well-balanced temperatures. The resulting sensation is fresh, relaxing and serene.

An open-plan kitchen and dining area leads through to a strikingly neat living room, which divides into two areas. From the second, cool sitting room, steps lead up to a wooden gallery. The double bed here can either accommodate a fifth person, or else be used for daytime siestas. It doesn't have a bathroom, but there's a guest toliet downstairs.

The house is extremely well finished with scrupulous attention to detail. Every item is of high quality, the kitchenware is top of the range, and the mattresses upstairs are excellently comfortable. Both bedrooms are twin-bedded (with beds pushed together) and both have beautifully tiled en-suite shower rooms. You sleep under traditional wood-and-cane ceilings and walk on natural terracotta tiles.

Outside, a large terrace offers intimate spots and shaded areas for meals al fresco and there are more private and relaxing corners by the generously large, irresistible swimming pool, just below. It has a salt filter for chlorine-free swims.

Together with the pretty gardens, it makes for a very attractive option.

There are plenty of reasons for simply staying put and enjoying the house and pool but beaches and restaurants (try the fresh fish!) at Torre del Mar are not far to drive: just 45 minutes. Historical Antequera city is the same distance away while Torcal Natural Park and its curious rock formations represent an enticing destination for fascinating walks.

Even closer – 10 minutes by car – are the Montes de Malaga, a protected Natural Park with Mediterranean pine forests and views of the sea.

In Colmenar, the nearest village from which the villa is approached, is a hotel with WiFi, should you require internet. If you don't want to bring a laptop, Torre del Mar on the coast has cybercafés.

The last part of the track to the villa should be negotiated with some care, as there are a few bumpy patches, but a normal car is all you need.
