As a quick look at the photographs will tell you, this holiday cottage and HA17 are very much alike. This one is slightly more spacious, but two families booking both houses – they are perfectly private, being at a considerable distance (some 90 metres) from each other – would be enjoying very similar accommodation and almost identical facilities.

The main difference is that the double-bedded room here is on the ground floor and has a wheelchair ramp to the living room and a walk-in shower. It also has direct access to a patio overlooking the quince orchard. Otherwise, the same details are valid for both houses. Each of them has an extendable dining table to seat eight people, so parties the two houses together can visit each other for meals.

The cottage, with one en-suite double and en-suite twin bedrooms, is set apart in the estate belonging to a manor house. Two pretty villages within walking distance and decent shopping is 6-8 minutes away by car. Wildlife and trekking in Aracena Natural Park, or a picnic at Aracena reservoir, day trips to Seville, the Rio Tinto mines, Portugal, even the Atlantic coast are all added reasons to make this your holiday base.


After arriving at the property down a good track to parking alongside the property, one enters via a shaded terrace to a smart, nicely furnished living room. There’s a CD/radio and, if you bring a laptop and the appropriate card, you can connect to internet. There’s a glass-fronted woodburner for cool months (firewood is included in the rental price).

The kitchen/dining room comes well-equipped with marble worktop, dishwasher, fan oven, fridge freezer and washing machine, and the extendable dining table mentioned above. The en suite two bedrooms are simple yet very pleasant. They have handmade, hand-painted furniture from Seville and solid wooden ceilings.

But it’s the outside world here that gives such enjoyment. The garden leads into the orchards, which you are free to wander, along with the rest of the grounds. From the modest pool (5m x 3m) you see a backdrop of fig and apple trees, where one or two sheep occasionally roam, and so may you, as are welcome to explore the estate at your leisure. In this gorgeously secluded area of Andalucia, the vegetation is rich and exuberant.

A path behind the house meanders through trees for walks to the hamlet of Los Marines (with one bar, at least, to slake thirsts after that valiant 20-minute stroll) and Fuenteheridos (40 mins on foot), a fine village with restaurants and a famous fountain. Children shouldn’t miss the amazing grotto in Aracena, just 8 km away. You can read more about this area in our Guide to Sierra de Aracena.

The manor house has operated as a country hotel in the past and it is still sometimes possible to order meals there, now in the capable hands of an English cookery expert.
