Many holiday homes are perfectly comfortable and adequately equipped, but just occasionally we come across one like this where you feel like moving in and staying. It is country living with the facilities you’d appreciate in a large family town house.
The location is fabulous, within Sierra de Aracena Natural Park, just over 1 km from Aracena town in one of Andalucía’s most picturesque spots. The market town itself is pretty and relaxed, well blessed with places to eat or drink with tapas, there’s even a medieval fortress on a hill to look after the easy-going inhabitants. There are 80 bars and restaurants, a theatre and discos: these people know how to treat themselves!
You arrive at the finca to find yourself amidst mature, well-kept olive groves. Grounds include a tree-covered hillock backing onto the whitewashed farmhouse villa, which looks out in turn onto green areas at sculpted levels. Flowering plants and herbs are mixed in amongst olives, sweet chestnuts, walnut, fig and other fruit trees. A decent sized swimming pool with ample room for sunbathing is situated alongside the house.
The farmhouse villa is splendid. Excellently comfortable and equipped, every room receives our mark of approval. The beamed living room is very spacious and the sofas are new. There’s a large fireplace for open fires in cooler months.
The kitchen has it all: a top of the range cooker, appliances that make cooking a pleasure, and a dishwasher. It leads out to a large terrace overlooking the pool and shaded by old olives, where meals can be taken. A barbecue is also available.
A downstairs library doubles as an office. Broadband internet is provided here and mobile coverage is very good at the finca. For kids, there’s a TV room with a video library. Note that this TV room has a confortable sofabed and is converted into an extra bedroom for two people when there are ten of you coming.
There are four upstairs bedrooms. The master double is especially large and en-suite. French windows open to a balcony with wonderful views. Beamed ceilings add warmth and character. Two more bedrooms, one double, the other a twin (can also be double-bedded, if preferred), are also spacious and bright. The fourth room is smaller and more suitable for children. It has a lower ceiling, a single bed and a futon that serves as another single.
The area around Aracena is distinctly different from the more rugged regions of Andalusia. Although hilly and wooded, it is more gentle and open, inviting even the less fit to stretch their legs and ramble its slopes. Temperatures are not extreme and usually very kind. It is famed for wild mushrooms and flowers, spring and autumn being particularly good seasons to visit. Horse riding offers a great way to appreciate the outstanding beauty of the locality.
Access is down a slightly bumpy track. Recommended excursions include the village of Jabugo (see Aracena map) for its famous cured ham, Seville (55 mins) and the marvellous beaches of Costa de la Luz (90 mins). Another interesting choice is Portugal, just 45 mins away.
