Sometimes you want to be in a glorious mountain setting in a quaint village, fantastic views and walking all around, at least a couple of good, reasonable restaurants for meals out, and a genuinely traditional house but one where you can also maintain communications with the outside world, especially via internet.

This quality property, conveniently located on a quiet street in Bubion village, combines the dignified character of a centuries-old Alpujarra property with modern facilities and plenty of space: altogether, it’s one of the classiest village rental options in the very relaxing mountain world of the high Alpujarra.

A very quiet street for parking makes for a good start. The door opens to a lobby whose beam-and-slate ceiling and tiled floor announces the traditional nature of the house.

To one side is a large room that begins with a wooden dining table (for six) by the window, moves on to a sitting area with two sofas in front of a glass-fronted fireplace and ends in a well-equipped kitchen.

There’s another sitting room upstairs, but this already provides an obvious and convivial focal point. In winter months, the log fire (glassed-off for safety) makes it cozy, firing central heating throughout the house, and the dining table doubles as a work station if you’ve brought a laptop. There’s WiFi upstairs, too, so you’re not restricted to this space.

Mobile phones work fine, although there are certain points within the property where we found that the signal fades.

On the other side of the lobby is a ground floor double bedroom with its own woodburning stove and a pretty en-suite shower room. The bedroom window looks out onto the street but it’s a quiet cul-de-sac: traffic noise isn’t an issue in this hillside village of 300 inhabitants.

Before going upstairs, do note the interior patio tiled in typical Granada style, which invites more light into the house and houses a utility room with dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. The patio is accessed from both kitchen and lobby.

A staircase – safe for little ones to climb and gated at the top – leads up to a hallway with French windows to a Juliet balcony and a grandfather clock. Off here lead the main lounge which combines with the children’s room, and a spacious double room with a large (1.65 m x 2 m) and comfortable bed (all the mattresses are good here, with the downstairs firmer, and the upstairs softer).

An added convenience upstairs is a walk-in dresser with plenty of wardrobe space.

The lounge has a very comfy sofa, two armchairs, a large, flat screen TV with free-to-view satellite channels and an Xbox. Please note that there’s no DVD or CD player in this house, but the X-box can play DVDs. There’s also an iPod docking station in the kitchen downstairs.

The lounge backs on to a bedroom with two individual beds for children. It shares a bathroom with the double bedroom across the hallway. There’s a full bathtub with a fixed overhead shower rose.

The accommodation maintains local architectural elements and high standards throughout, while decoration is provided by draped wall hangings and pictures.

It’s one of the top houses in Bubión village, but we’re not quite finished yet: over little street is an annexe mirador that really completes the property.

This is a newly refurbished viewpoint facility on three levels. It’s a small building in its own right, whose private, furnished sun terrace presents superb views down the Poqueira Gorge or up to the Sierra Nevada mountains.

There’s a kitchenette with fridge to keep cold drinks and a staircase down to two more levels: to a shower and WC indoors and outside to a second, furnished, barbecue terrace, shaded this time, and an enclosed garden terrace just below here which tends to be a favourite spot for children to play.

If you have toddlers with you and find the inner staircase of the annexe a little steep and narrow for them, not to worry: for one thing it’s gated across the top and then there’s external access to the lower terraces around the side, down a few simple steps from the street, past a sprouting palm tree.

The house is well located in the middle of Bubión village, a short walk from restaurants and bars, and the old streets wind down to the lower reaches of the village where paths lead out for hikes in the Poqueira Gorge: down to the river or neighbouring Pampaneira.

Walkers will be in their element, with the Sierra Nevada National Park directly above and trails leading through protected forest lands.

The other white mountain villages are similarly enchanting – Capileira just 2 km up the road or the hamlets of La Taha 15 minutes away – highly recommended for visits.

Granada and the Alhambra Palaces are just over an hour away by car, as is the Costa Tropical for a day at the beach.
