This neat little mountain cottage is just the place for a couple who want to be on their own, well away from it all, and spend their holiday exploring some great hiking trails in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The principal attraction here is the unspoilt location in an utterly tranquil spot in the high Alpujarra. It’s very pretty and very private in nearly two acres of hillside estate.

There’s also a large swimming pool for the summer months in the natural garden grounds.

A short track into the country finca takes you between a few almond trees to the little cottage.

The self-catering villa is newly built and faced with local stone to blend in with the natural surroundings. It’s small, pleasant and functional. A long terrace runs all the way along the front, and the views are marvellous: from the private hillside terrain that spreads out before you, over treetops to distant mountains.

Entrance is from the terrace, to a limited but neat and wood-beamed living room, with a kitchenette for preparing simple meals.

This is one mountain location we emphatically recommend for walking at any time of the year. If it gets cold, there’s a top-of-the-range wood-burning stove which warms the house up remarbably well and keeps going all night. Firewood is included.

The bedroom has an excellent King-size double bed (actually 2 beds made up together), in a room with French windows that open onto the terrace. Please note that the wall heater in the bedroom is not connected.

On the other side of the living room is an extra bedroom; it's rather small and we consider it as suitable for a child only. There’s a bathroom with a shower over a full bathtub, nicely tiled in traditional Granada style.

Outside, you have a little table and chairs for meals and drinks on the terrace, which is shaded from the strong Andalucia sun by a roof and a covering vine. There’s a light here for sitting out in the evenings.
Separating you from the nearest neighbouring property is a grand expanse of semi-wild garden, planted here and there with fruit trees; off to the right, in an intimate corner, a good-sized swimming pool has been left whitish in colour to respect the special Natural Park location.

It’s a new property in an old setting and you soon get a feeling for the place.

This area of the high Alpujarra is called La Taha, a nomenclature that survives from the days of the Moorish occupation 400 years ago. It’s fabulous for hiking! Just down the track that goes up to the cottage are signposted walks to neighbouring villages that take you through centuries-old chestnut trees and past the equally old acequias, or irrigation channels, that still bring mountain waters to local market gardens.

The nearest village is Capilerilla (not to be confused with Capileira, the goal of another great walk over the ridge to the Poqueira Gorge). Capilerilla is too small to have a shop: there’s just a little hotel that opens sometimes to serve drinks and meals.

But you do all your shopping and try out restaurants in Pitres, which is only 1 km down the road. You’ll find the area’s best little supermarket here, tapas bars, arts and crafts centre and Friday open air market.

One of the nicer local restaurants has WiFi if you need internet at some point during your stay. We’ll send you a detailed local guide with useful information for the area as one of your holiday documents.

-We consider the small bedroom as suitable for a child only.
-The swimming pool will be open from 1st June – 30th September 2012 weather permitting.
-The house is heated by the wood-burning stove and a reasonable amount of firewood is included in the rental price.
-Sorry, no pets at this property. If you're planning on bringing an animal companion, please tell us and we'll try to find you somewhere else.
