Just walking distance from Mecina village in the desirable Taha district of the high Alpujarra we find a beautiful estate in complete privacy shaded by mature trees and tall bamboo. There are well-kept gardens and freshwater springs, one of them feeding a very large, shared, solar-heated swimming pool from a natural waterfall.

The Spanish owners who live on site offer three quality self-contained studio apartments in separate locations. The style is modern rustic, with rounded edges and local stone suiting the organic environment.

Each independent garden apartment has its own entrance and terrace and each has a different path to the swimming pool. All have fine mosquito netting on the windows so as not to obscure the views. In winter, fireplaces provide a welcoming natural warmth to supplement the radiator heating. They share use of the huge pool, which has a children’s paddling pool alongside. There are barbecues and sunloungers. A complementary welcome pack typically includes fruit from the local trees, vegetables from the cortijo’s own plot, wine, canapés, cheese and olive oil.

Por Alegrias (sleeps 2 / 4)
is a colourful, wood-beamed studio on floors of different levels. It’s open-plan, sunny, with a cozy sitting corner and a gorgeously tiled, large shower. There is a double bed and another sleeping area with two comfortable bunk beds. The apartment is small (36 m²) but well-arranged. It looks out onto lawned gardens where it has a nice dining spot by fruit trees providing shade. Por Alegrias is the most private of the three studios.

Por Bulerias (sleeps 2 plus child)
is the largest studio apartment (approx. 55 m²) and the most rustic with old beams. There is a central glass-fronted fireplace between two sofas in a slate-floored living room and this is divided by a curtained archway from a double-bedded room with a supplementary bed for a child. There is a good-sized kitchen and equally spacious dining area. Two outdoor areas with a shaded porch make this a very pleasant option. It is close to the swimming pool yet screened from it by bamboo.

Por Soleares (sleeps 2)
has a private garden and you enter from there under a small porch terrace with great views. Like the other studios, it is open-plan and colourfully decorated. Its 50 m² include a sitting area, small dining area with a glass-fronted fireplace and a kitchen area that is illuminated by skylights. The outstanding feature is undoubtedly the extravagant mosaic-tiled whirlpool and spa bath, which also has natural light filtering through skylights in a half-domed ceiling. There is a double bed. Outside, sunloungers are enclosed by a bamboo screen.

The owners are unintrusive and likely only to appear to offer fresh fruit juice on the house. They speak a little English if you have no Spanish and are pleased to help out with local information.

There are two small villages within walking distance of the country estate, each with a bar/restaurant and outdoor terrace where good food is to be had. Walking is a treat, with paths linking up to other villages in the Taha. It’s all very tranquil and the climate milder than the nearby Poqueira Gorge where the villages of Bubion and Capileira are situated.

The location is suitable for day trips to Granada and the Costa Tropical.
