After many years of working with accommodation throughout the Alpujarras, we at Rustical Travel have grown ever more fond of offering the district of La Taha as a special favourite. Once you have visited the area, it’s easy to understand why. It has many delightful byways and corners to discover and here is one of them.

From the high road linking the Poqueira Gorge with Trevelez (the highest village in Spain), a lane branches off to wind down through a gully as far as the sleepy hamlet of Atalbeitar. Before you reach here, there is a restored farmhouse commanding high views across to the Contraviesa range where just two self catering rural apartments are offered for holiday stays.

The once abandoned farmhouse was rescued from ruin relatively recently by the owners, who have transformed and enlarged it to make a dwelling for themselves and two discrete, self-contained apartments, each with an appropriate measure of privacy, looking onto shared gardens.

The apartments are simple and pleasant, representing comfortable places to spend time in the mountains of the Alpujarra and explore from. They are decorated in good taste, uncluttered, light and airy, and have an agreeable, welcoming atmosphere. They come properly equipped and conform to a standard that is superior to the norm for accommodation in the region.

Each apartment is practical and sensibly designed to make use of outdoor areas: so what are the differences between the two?

Apartment 1 is the more spacious of the two
and is situated at the front of the farmhouse, where its south-facing terrace has uninterrupted views of the semi-wild Trevelez valley: a very relaxing aspect in a pastoral setting. Although the country lane goes by the farmhouse to Atalbeitar (population approx. 30), it is little more than a surfaced track which comes to an end there, and so there is precious little traffic. To one side of the porch/terrace, Apartment 1 has its own sunny patio.

Apartment 2 is located in back of the farmhouse, where its shaded, exterior terrace connects much more intimately with the well-kept gardens and a furnished pergola. It is equipped to the same standard as Apartment 1. The gardens are a botanical oasis. They continue from the terraces where they offer quiet spots to sit, read and enjoy the mountain air.

Many people choose La Alpujarra for the hiking and La Taha is ideal for this, tiny villages leading out to paths that meander through chestnut groves or down to the river. Guests staying at these apartments will find themselves spoiled for choice, even if they prefer to drive up and save their legs the last part of a steep climb up the mountain lane.

The location invites you to go one way to Trevelez or the other way to the Poqueira Gorge for Bubión and Capileira: between them, the three highest villages in the whole of Spain, with access up through pine forest to National Parkland and Mulhacen, the highest mountain on the Iberian peninsula. The whitewashed villages are strikingly pretty and unusual with their jumble of old houses, all with flat roofs and an assortment of toadstool-like chimneys.

Closer by, Pitres village offers good facilities in terms of its supermarket, Friday market day in the square and a couple of bars with terraces. The best restaurants in the area are dotted around, especially in the hamlets of Mecina Fondales just below.

Your hosts are very good cooks. If you order it in advance, an oven-ready dish can be left in the fridge to heat up if you don't want to shop or eat out the day you arrive; similarly, during your stay you can order excellent 3 or 4-course meals. A modest welcome pack is already provided (included in the rental price) so that you don't have to hunt for breakfast.

You can, of course, cook in your apartment, which has a well-equipped kitchen.

Notes:
-For the first night of stays in cold months, firewood is provided free of charge (underfloor central heating throughout is included in the rental).
-Pets may be allowed but only by request and on payment of a returnable deposit.
-Guests who do not wish to cook can order very good meals cooked by the owners.

In open countryside in an area of orchards, almonds and local vineyards. Access down a short , steepish stretch of asphalted lane to parking directly outside the farmhouse.
