As we know, some old houses are restored to death by over-enthusiastic new owners. This is an example of how to improve and add while leaving in place elements that suit the style and atmosphere of an attractive Andalusian village.

It is rustically framed by the original floors and doors, furnished with some polished wood antiques, left uncluttered, and then painted in vivid Mediterranean blue and earthy ochre. Decoration is marked by paintings chosen by the artist owners, whose touch is evident throughout the house.

The location is central Gaucin: right by shops and restaurants. The 12th century castle is also close by, up a steep slope. Gaucin (see location on Ronda map) has more facilities to offer the visitor than most village destinations in the Ronda mountains, so it is not that sleepy and you might hear some morning traffic in the downstairs double bedroom. This is, however, double-glazed and the house generally feels very quiet, with outdoor terraces acting as peaceful retreats.

From the main hall downstairs, an archway leads through to a large-windowed reception room, equipped with desk, which could be used as a study. From here, the hallway leads to a double bedroom, the kitchen and a sitting room with open fireplace. There is a full bathroom off the sitting room, from which doors open to the patio and its small but tempting, mosaic-tiled swimming pool.

The entire patio is an extremely pleasant area to relax and dine, or for children to play. Like the upstairs terraces, the patio and pool are totally private, unseen by neighbouring houses. Furniture includes sunloungers and there is a utility room by the pool with a washing machine.

The main living room is on the house’s first floor, as are two bedrooms (a double and a twin), each with a balcony onto the street, a shower room and access to a terrace overlooking the patio, to which it is connected by old stone steps.

Another flight of steps go up to a third outdoor area: the roof terrace, from which the views are superb. It’s exciting scenery, with the river winding down through the valleys looking for the sea, the rock of Gibraltar and mountains to one side and distant Africa appearing to float above the Mediterranean.

There are plenty of reasons for choosing Gaucin as a holiday base. Rambling in the local environs is popular (there are books on the trails), and there are good places to have tapas and enjoy Mediterranean cuisine.
 
For day trips, you are spoilt for choice: the historic town of Ronda is just 40 minutes away, the Costa beaches even less. Gibraltar is only one hour away. And nearer at hand are traditional villages such as Genalguacil or Jimena de la Frontera: well worth a visit.
