Here we have a very fine mountain farmhouse, furnished and decorated as a family home (which it is during the winter months), well away from it all above Capileira village in the high Alpujarras.

It’s thoroughly private and peaceful, as you might expect of a property just below Sierra Nevada National Park at 1,700 metres above sea level (see Alpujarras map) The south-facing views are tremendous and the terraces take full advantage of this aspect. Together with its gardens and large solar-heated swimming pool, this lovely, wood-beamed 500-year old cortijo is a splendid proposition for a special holiday in rural Andalucia.

Drive up the Sierra Nevada “highway” (the quiet mountain road that ends at the National Park) from Capileira and 1 km along a track (in decent condition), and you find the farmhouse villa in fresh, open mountain countryside, with immense views all the way down the Poqueira Gorge to the southern Sierras. Behind it rises Mulhacén, the highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula.

The accommodation consists of a main house and a connecting apartment. The apartment is self-contained and can be rented out on its own to smaller parties with full private use of the property’s grounds and pool: see AP12. The two units are never rented separately, so privacy is guaranteed. Here, the property is considered as a whole, sleeping eight people in ample comfort, with a good sofa bed in the second lounge accomodating a ninth person (for a supplement).

The main house has a beautifully inviting, spacious lounge with a first-class wood-burning stove and piano. The kitchen is similarly large and attractive, as well as being well-equipped; together with the curtained-off dining area, it is open plan with the lounge. The atmosphere is that of a bright, roomy, traditional farmhouse home.

There are four bedrooms in all, two in the main house and two more in the apartment on the upper level, with which it connects via a dividing door. The apartment provides a second living and dining area, kitchen and bathroom.

The entire property has central heating for cold months in addition to a wood stove in each lounge area.

There are two acres of grounds, with pride of place going to a 10-metre long solar-heated swimming pool. It is terraced with loungers for sunbathing and completely private. A lawned area by the pool has a badminton and there are cherry, apple, pear and walnut tree whose fruits you are welcome to eat.

The location is an open invitation to don boots and hike through the mountain countryside, not least in the high altitude National Park up the road. Some may want to hike to the summit of Mulhacén (always cold at 3,412 m, be warned!), others may simply want to saunter the half hour it takes to go down the path to Capileira. Maps are left in the cortijo for you to consult.

Horse riding is available very close by and other activities such as pottery and painting can often be arranged in one of the array of small white villages that make up the high Alpujarra, while Granada, the Alhambra and beaches of the Costa Tropical represent major draws for day trips.

Mostly, you’ll find it’s a place you want to stay and soak up the mountain atmosphere, enjoying quality facilities, with views that on a clear day reach all the way over to the Rif Mountains in Morocco.

A basic welcome pack with food items is included in the rental price.
