For a high mountain experience of the old Alpujarra at its traditional best, this farmhouse villa is hard to beat.

It’s as utterly peaceful in its hillside setting as it was 500 years ago, when it was built. Today, the facilities are rather better, though.

You get there by an easy enough drive from pretty Capileira village (see Alpujarras map). It’s 3 km up the Sierra Nevada mountain road (which ends at the National Park) and 1 km along a track (a normal car is fine except in winter).

You come to your beautifully secluded farmhouse, firmly placed on Mulhacén, Spain’s highest mountain.

The scenery is stunning by sun, moon or stars. Views reach across the mountain landscape to the Mediterranean Sea and, on a clear day, you can make out the Rif Mountains in Morocco, from where the house’s architectural design originated with the Berbers.

The cortijo is genuine and welcoming. It has the atmosphere of a bright, roomy, traditional mountain home, set in two acres of private grounds.

It starts off with terraces on different levels, all south-facing and offering tremendous views. In summer months, the 10-metre solar-heated swimming pool below and its represents a huge attraction.

A lawned area by the pool, planted round with cherry, apple, pear and walnut trees, has sunloungers and a badminton.

The farmhouse sleeps eight people and comes in two parts: the main house interconnecting to an apartment on the upper floor. In off-peak month, the main house alone can be rented by fewer people at a lower price (and then the apartment is closed off and unoccupied).

The accommodation has a pleasantly rustic Alpujarras feel, finished with some nice touches. Beamed ceilings and tiled floors together with local handicrafts as decoration make it very homely, and there is central heating and a wood burning stove to ensure warmth and comfort in the colder months.

There's also WiFi internet so you can keep in touch with "civilization". Capileira also has an internet café just above a little wine bar.

An inviting, spacious lounge, where a first-class wood-burning stove and a piano stand out, moves on to a dining area (which can be curtained-off) and an attractive, well-equipped country kitchen.

Two bedrooms and a bathroom here are supplemented by another two bedrooms and bathroom in the apartment, which also gives you a second living and dining room. A good sofa bed in the second lounge can accommodate a ninth person (at a supplement).

The location is an open invitation to don boots and walk the paths of the mountain countryside, not least in the high altitude National Park up the road. Some may want to hike to the summit of Mulhacén (3,412 m), others may simply want to saunter the half hour it takes to go down the path to Capileira. Maps are left in the cortijo for you to find your way around.

Capileira is an enchanting village where you will find two small supermarkets, a variety of craftshops, café-bars, restaurants, bank, chemist’s, bakeries and butcher’s.

Horse riding for all the family is available very close by and other activities such as pottery and painting can often be arranged in one of the small, white villages that make up the high Alpujarras.

If you feel the urge to explore outside the Alpujarras, Granada with the Alhambra, and beaches of the Costa Tropical make for enticing day trips.

-The swimming pool is open from the beginning of May until the end of September, weather permitting.

Changeover day: normally Saturday in summer High Season.
When booked at the reduced rate for 4 people or less, the Main house only is used an the Apartment is left closed.
A 9th person can be accommodated at a supplement of 60 euros per week.
