In the much photographed Poqueira Gorge, you will see the small, white villages of Capileira and Bubion, separated by semi-wild mountainside interspersed with orchards and vegetable plots. The mile of road that winds between the two villages has only two or three properties along it in what was once a Moorish settlement. This is one of them.

It has the distinct advantage of having the natural surroundings and feel of a country villa while remaining a short walk from Bubion , one of the Alpujarra’s emblematic villages. It is set 30 metres down from the quiet road that leads up past Capileira to Sierra Nevada National Park, (see Alpujarra map) where it has its own driveway, private parking, gardens and swimming pool.

It’s virtually private. There is just one neighbouring house which is beyond and below, facing away towards views of the mountains and Gorge. Behind the thick vegetation that hides the garden from view runs a footpath all the way up to Capileira. It’s public yet little-known, so you may well find that you are the only ones who make use of it.

He house is a typically rustic Alpujarra affair with beamed ceilings, terracotta floor tiles, open fireplace and chimney. It’s not a luxury house, just a pleasant countryside property where you can enjoy a quiet week or two with gardens and pool, go on some wonderful walks or horse riding along mountain trails.

The entrance is under a furnished, vine covered porch. The ground floor has a large kitchen and breakfast table, a spacious open-plan living / dining room with open fireplace, small double bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with great views from the balcony, and another bathroom.

Doors open from the kitchen to a completely private rear terrace and lawned gardens with a tremendous 12-metre swimming pool. From the garden you can see straight down the massive Gorge to the southern cordillera and even, on especially clear days, make out the Rif mountains in distant Morocco.

Bubion, just 5 minutes walk down the road, is a tranquil, largely unchanged old village, whose main activity takes place at the top along the single thoroughfare joining Bubion with Pampaneira below and Capileira above. There are at least two good and inexpensive restaurants, bars and shops. Otherwise, it’s a place of twisting streets with geranium-decked, whitewashed houses, many of which date back hundreds of years. The church square at the foot of the village is one of the quietest places in the village.

The walks that lead off in various directions through the Andalusia mountain terrain are rewarding for different reasons in different seasons. Day trips by car include Granada and the Costa Tropical.

Notes:
- Smokers are requested to smoke outside.
-The double beds upstairs are King size, downstairs the bed is a double but smaller in size.
-As the pool is not gated, has no shallow end and is right by the house, we do not recommend this villa to families with small children.
