This fine old house, and the lower reaches of Bubion where it sits, breathe history. It was built and inhabited by Moors over 500 years ago, predating much of the rest of the whitewashed village and its 16th century church. These days, the house is offered as a traditional holiday home: quality accommodation in the most tranquil and pleasant quarter of the village.

Here, at the foot of the village, cars can reach but go no further. You can normally leave the car by the church with its very quiet square, 50 metres away from the house. The church and the square have an enchanting simplicity. There is a bar with chairs and tables to sit out in the calm plaza, well below the main road running through the top of Bubión.

Notwithstanding its antiquity, the house is comfortable, clean and well equipped for holiday stays. Along with many original features, you’ll find a great deal of newer handcrafts and attractive additions.

The ground floor is all open plan, cooking, dining and living areas forming a unified space. It opens to a private terrace with an uninterrupted view down the valley and across to the Mediterranean Sea: spectacular. There is also a very pleasant en-suite double bedroom.

Like many a house in La Alpujarra, it is built down a hill, stairs go down and up to different levels. Downstairs is a second double-bedded room, tasteful and cosy with whitewashed stone walls. A hallway leads to a bathroom tiled beautifully in Arabic style.

Upstairs, a large roof terrace provides an excellent opportunity for sunbathing on loungers or admiring the remarkable views of the area.

Bubion is a very well preserved village with excellent examples of popular traditional architecture. It enjoys a mountain location within the Poqueira gorge, with views of the distant Mediterranean and up to the formidable summits of Sierra Nevada over 3,000 metres high, snow-capped for most of the year.

This is an excellently tranquil location to disconnect from rushed city lives, and ideal also for those seeking active holidays, with some of the best trekking options in Europe and a unique Mediterranean mountainous landscape.
