Rustical´s review See prices
Just down from the village church, in the oldest and quietest neighbourhood of Bubión (population 300), this is one of the last houses in the village. The street then comes to an end and becomes a country path, and this meanders down the gorge to neighbouring Pampaneira. It's very pretty, with spectacular mountain views on all sides and complete peace and quiet.
Reached through a private, tree-shaded garden, planted with shrubs and flowers, is a stone-built cottage built on one floor: a very special, rustic-style studio apartment. It's south-facing, so sunlight fills the open-plan design and views sweep through the mountains and down to the Mediterranean Sea in the distance.
The sunsets, particularly in winter when they are deep and red, are a joy, often lighting up the sea and even outlining the Rif Mountains in Morocco.
The house has an eclectic mix of good quality rustic and chunky furniture, with Moroccan rugs and modest antique pieces lending a sense of understated class. The living area has comfortable sofas, DVD and music centre.
French windows give on to a small, completely private terrace, where views are uninterrupted and the mountain air is alive and fresh.
There is a larger than average double bed (the bedroom curtained-off fom the living area), and a compact but perfectly functional kitchen with dishwasher. The apartment has an L-shape and a dining room branches off from the kitchen, with seating for you and guests, also. The main entrance to the cottage is here, as is the fenced-off, lawned garden.
In winter months, when the Alpujarran landscape is otherworldly, the snow lying some way above Bubión on the mountains, there's an open fireplace for log fires.
Here you are ensconced in one of the prettiest village neighbourhoods of the mountain world of La Alpujarra. The hikes are terrific and Bubión has at least two bar/restaurants open year round to restore the hungriest of ramblers after a long trek.
Parking is by the church square. It's a narrow, winding drive down from the main road but everybody manages it!
