This is a marvellous villa. Over the years, the interior seems to have matured as much as the marvellous tropical gardens outside. The main living room is opulent and extremely spacious under a vaulted wooden ceiling. Tasteful, rustic and antique furnishings, original oil paintings, objets d’art, all balance very agreeably.
Facilities are those of a modern holiday home and include broadband wifi internet. It accommodates six people extremely comfortably.
The three bedrooms are on the first floor. The Master double and twin bedrooms are en suite. There’s an additional shower room downstairs for the other double bedroom. An additional bed for a child can be made made up in the Master bedroom, if need be (for a small extra charge). All very comfortable, with the kind of detail you expect from a home of distinct class. Also on this floor is a leafy verandah from where you can look down to the tree-lined river, along which you can take leisurely strolls via picnic spots.
The kitchen is fully equipped and there’s a prep kitchen, too. If cooking’s not your thing when on holiday and you don’t care to always eat out (Jimena does have very good restaurants, though), the services of a top cook can be contracted to prepare meals of your choice. There are three inside dining areas and more outside.
The luxury continues outside in the form of the best developed semi-tropical and tropical gardens we have seen at a private house in Spain. Colourful and fragrant blooms thrive under date palms, avocado and banana. In one corner, koi and goldfish swim round an old spring-fed well.
The greenery surrounds a 9-metre swimming pool, which like the broad stone-flagged terrace (ideal for unhurried dinners), is illuminated by night.
The entire property is consummately private, yet the village is a only short walk away. For many, Jimena outdoes Gaucin (30 mins away) in charm with its elegant streets arranged under a Moorish castle. There is no shortage of cafés, shops, bars and restaurants from cheap and cheerful to high class (we'll send you our recommendations). Jimena is also well-known for its annual International Jazz Festival.
There are some wonderful walks in the area and a well-made housebook explains the best of these. You are just minutes away from the Alcornoque Natural Park, a haven for birdlife. Horse riding can also be arranged.
The location offers a number of enticing options for day trips. Gaucin, Gibraltar, Ronda, Seville, Jerez and the beaches at Sotogrande. Sotogrande, together with Valderrama, is also a major golfing destination.
Railway enthusiasts can take the little narrow gauge train from Jimena to Ronda, which nowadays is an even more popular destination than Cordoba.
And Morocco is not far away! A 35-minute hovercraft trip from the surfers’ paradise of Tarifa takes you to Tangiers in Morocco.
The property owner is on hand, if needed, in a neighbouring garden cottage which is completely and discretely independent from the property.
