This grand old house is excellent for people who want to holiday in dignified comfort in one of Andalusia’s most impressive rural areas. The location in the heart of Grazalema Natural Park offers some of the most interesting walking and exploring in Spain.
Ronda is less than half an hour away.
It is a pleasure to be able to offer a house of this kind, not least on account of the charm of Grazalema. In a quiet area of the friendly village and yet only a two to three-minute walk to its restaurants and tapas bars, it sums up all that's best about rustic living.
Here are a few comments by previous guests:
“A wonderful find. The house is beautiful, cared for lovingly.”
“Run by Ana and Andre who are extremely friendly and helpful”
“Lovely pool area. Nice areas just to sit and chill, watching birds, especially the vultures soaring. Lovely lounge area for relaxing should weather be inclement… The area is superb for walking.”
“The views from the terrace were exceptional. A trip to Zahara over the mountains was breathtaking. This is a walkers paradise with (I think) eight walks ranging from 3 km to 10 km directly from the accommodation, with an opportunity to see deer, lizards, eagles etc. This was certainly value for money.”
“High up in the mountains, this little village has not been ruined by time and tourism.”
The property is a real treat: warm, welcoming and very spacious. It has privacy (total), gardens (colourful and well-tended) on different levels, a splendid swimming pool (plenty large enough for proper swims) and the satisfying style of tradition in every nook and cranny.
The house’s main entrance is to the upper floor, where a reception hall leads to bedrooms and to a pretty gallery overlooking the rest of the villa and its gardens. The views are of tremendously rugged mountain scenery.
There are six bedrooms, each en-suite with bathtub. Like the rest of the house, they have heating whenever necessary. Four of the bedrooms have their own sitting area and all of them have their own outdoor terrace, except for one of the doubles which has a balcony.
A hallway continues to the kitchen and, a few steps down, a 75 m² living room gives ample space to spread out and relax in different reading and sitting areas. Furnishing is suited to the country house style and the overall standard is very sound. Lighting is pleasant as is the decoration. A glass-fronted fireplace adds to the cozy feel of the place.
The kitchen is good and well-equipped: the idea is that cooking meals as well sharing them in the dining room should be part of the enjoyment of the house.
There is a second entrance from the street just below the villa that goes directly into the gardens. These are arranged below the house’s terraces – which are themselves distributed around the property in such a way that makes walking around the villa in the morning into a proprietary thrill.
If the furnished terraces are extremely agreeable, the gardens are just lovely. There are all kinds of flowering plant, both familiar and exotic, mature shrubs and trees, and a lawned area, too. The gardens are also home to the swimming pool. It is generously sized and comes with a convenient WC. The pool area has plenty of sunloungers and is not overlooked.
The village of Grazalema is one of our personal favourites, one Spain’s most beautiful, and a real classic amongst the pueblos blancos of Cadiz. It is situated out on its own in the Nature Reserve of the same name, where the rambling is compelling. The Garganta Verde walk is especially good, but there are plenty more to discover. The porous limestone landscape is alluring, even when it is hidden beneath your feet it goes on: don’t miss the Cueva del Gato (the Cat’s Cave) for a fascinating introduction to the subterranean world of rivers and lakes (best explored with a guide).
Other activities such as canoeing and canyoning can often be arranged.
The beauty of summer in Grazalema is that the elevated location in the Sierra means it is spared the oppressive heat of lower-lying Andalusian areas and cities. It makes nights especially comfortable. You can visit Ronda (just 25 minutes away), or Sevilla by day and return afterwards to the relief of the milder atmosphere of Grazalema.
For a day out a beach, Cadiz is a definite possible at an hour and a quarter. The other white villages represent further reasons for exploring more locally.
