If you're looking for undisturbed holidays surrounded by nothing but rich and healthy nature will find that this villa fits the bill perfectly.

The scenery on arrival is simply fantastic. It is wild, lush and green, with the sound of the river in the background. Views sweep down the river and far along the valley. Sunset and sunrise experienced from the terraces are special moments in this totally private, secluded woodland location.

Estepona and Costa del Sol beaches are 45 minutes drive away.

The villa’s high-ceilinged, open-plan style suits the expansiveness outdoors. A huge window allows light to flood in and its vista sustains the sense of contact with the external splendour. Rustic furnishing, wood floors and beams, together with blues and pinks in the decoration lend warmth and character to the house.

The main living and dining area and kitchen are on the ground floor, as are two of the four bedrooms, the other two being accessed by (unrailed) stairs. There is a bathroom on both floors.

The outside areas are spacious and set up to seat 8 people for meals, although we found the indoor dining area comfortable for 6 only. The large verandah along the front of the house and just above the pool area is a favourite spot; it has a broad, well-equipped barbecue area that links to semi-wild garden areas planted with fruit trees.

The pool area, accessed down a few steps, has been built high up to give swimmers and sunbathers a sensational view down the valley. Although it has some protection from drops, we do not consider it suitable for toddlers.

Rambling in this area is highly rewarding. The walk down from the villa to the river Genal from the house is naturally inviting and here you can take a dip and explore around. In the Pinsapo woods are a rare variety of Spanish fir. Elsewhere, they are at serious risk due to global warming, but here they seem to thrive.

There are a couple of very good country restaurants, one 4 km up river at a spot where you can bathe, and the profusion of water in this sunny locality makes it ideal for wild swims and canyoning adventure.

We'll send you details about what to do and places to visit, plus tips for restaurants, as one of your holiday documents.

Genalguacil, often visited for its permanent outdoor art exhibition, is a lovely Andalusian village to have nearby. Unlike popular Gaucin, for instance, it has very few tourists yet plenty of charm of its own.

During the first two weeks in August (in even years), artists from all over the world come here to make sculptures that then remain on display and are looked after by the village, and these represent an attraction in their own right.

Genalguacil offers most of the services you may need, including simple, typical bars that serve meals and now a new restaurant with WiFi.

For those who fancy something a little more sophisticated – or just busier! – nearby Gaucin is attractive and interesting to visit, the Costa del Sol is about 45 minutes by car, and historic Ronda is an hour away: an excellent day trip to one of Andalucia's most attractive towns.

A longish dirt track (10 to 15 minutes) from pretty Genalguacil village leads you here. You only need a normal car but care should be taken as it is steep in short parts.
